It is going to be a great welcoming of the New Year here in Birch Bay. We are very fortunate to have such beauty with the Bay and the end of 2012 will be be no exception. We have three wonderful events planned, and all of us with the Birch Bay Chamber of Commerce wish each and every one of you a 2013 that is filled with Joy and Happiness.
On Monday, New Years Eve the first event is our Annual Ring of Fire and Hope. We recommend that you bring your own flares (without spikes or nails) and light them at 7:00 PM on the beach. Started by Mike & Rose Kent of Windermere Real Estate, Birch Bay Beach is ringed with fire when hundreds of people light flares at 7:00 on New Years Eve. This provides participants an opportunity to reflect on the end of one year and the hope for the coming year. The past year we faced disasters, wars, and shootings – it was also full of hope, friendships, and fellowship. So join your Chamber and neighbors of Birch Bay at 7:00 PM, December 31, 2012! This year we have a limited number of flares, and everyone is encouraged to bring their own flares as the Chamber will limit the number of flares for any household to 2 and we will be handing them out at 5:00 PM.
You do not want to miss the 30th Annual Birch Bay Waterslides Polar Bear Swim. It is a fantastic way to kick off 2013 and it is just one heck of a lot of fun. Now the last two years have been great weather, calm seas and enjoyment of the refreshing cool of the waters of Birch Bay. Even if you do not go in the water, you cannot help but get swept up in the fun. As always we will have costume judging, Bay Cafe is providing hot drinks, and the plunge will again be kicked off by our own North Whatcom Fire District when they set off the fire engine sirens right at 11:00 on January 1, 2013 in front of the VIC.
At 1:00 PM we will be holding the 1st Annual International Broom Hockey Tournament may just be the hockey event of the year for the United States and Canada. Held January 1st, 2013 at 1:00 PM, at the Birch Bay Waterslides (4874 Birch Bay Lynden Road, Blaine, WA), this event is a great family friendly event held in Birch Bay. This event is being held at the suggestion of the Northwest Park and Recreation District 2, in conjunction with the Birch Bay Chamber of Commerce as an additional activity to the world famous Birch Bay Polar Bear Swim, which will be held at 11:00 on January 1st. According to Heidi Holmes, “We wanted to provide an activity for local people to attend, something fun to do after the Plunge, it’s an opportunity to create community spirit and hopefully, as it grows over the years, we’ll have more teams and something else for people to enjoy on New Year’s Day.”
Again, we welcome you to join us for an exciting 24 hours of family fun here in Birch Bay. We look forward to seeing you!
