Chopped – 7 Families Compete For The Best Chef – A Report On Fun In Birch Bay

One of the great things that happens in Birch Bay is the formation of new friendships and rekindling of old relationships. This was true this week when 7 families got together and held the 3rd Annual Chopped Contest, where the participants were challenged to prepare a meal using ingredients that are selected and provided by the organizers to the contestants for each of three events. This year there were three teams – “Bald Man and Hair Boy”, “The Ginger Ninja & Spice Girl”, and “The Beatches”.

The challenge was to prepare one appetizer, entree and dessert using the ingredients that were selected at a minimum, although they are permitted to use other ingredients as well.  For the appetizer they had to use peanut butter, sardines, refried beans, apples and candy grapefruits.  They had 20 minutes to prepare the appetizer. For the entree, they had to use a strawberry chocolate drink, al dente squid ink noodles, artichoke hearts, bamboo shoots, pixy stix, sun dried tomatoes, chicken breast, milk chocolate cream cheese and rainbow bacon (and a drink of their choice was required). They had 30 minutes to prepare the entre. For the dessert they had to use strawberry shortcake rolls, popcorn, caramel apple wrappers, jalapeño peppers and tofu. They had 20 minutes to prepare the dessert.

Each of the events are graded by an independent panel of food experts (they know what they like at least) in three different categories – Presentation, Taste and Creativity.  Each are rated on a scale of 1-10 for a maximum score of 30 points for each event. After the chefs have created each dish, the results are announced, and while challenges and discussion may occur, the decision of the judges is final and binding.

In the first heat for the appetizer, Bald Man and Hair Boy took first with a score of 25, The Beatches took second with a score of 21, and The Ginger Ninja & Spice Girl took third with 19.  In the second heat for the dinner, The Beatches took first place with a score of 24, The Ginger Ninja & Spice Girl took second place with a score of 23, and Bald Man and Hair Boy took third with a score of 19.  In the third heat for the dessert, Bald Man and Hair Boy took first with a score of 25, The Beatches took second with a score of 23, and The Ginger Ninja & Spice Girl took third with a score of 18.

The competition was stiff, the spirit friendly, and support from the audience, well lets just say they had lots of suggestions and ideas.  The final results were:

  • 1st Place – Bald Man & Hair Boy (69 out of 90)
  • 2nd Place – The Beatches (68 out of 90)
  • 3rd Place – The Ginger Ninja & Spice Girl (60 out of 90)

There is no doubt that everyone involved had a great time, and you are probably wondering how the food turned out.  It was surprisingly good, in fact the food was more than good, it was all eaten by the audience and judges.  The ingredients on the surface looked like it might have a different outcome, but these chefs are good.

Most importantly, it was the friendships renewed and created that made it a special evening, right here on the beach in Birch Bay against another beautiful sunset.  I cannot wait until Chopped 2013!
